                         sistemas transientes que atuam na m{\'e}dia troposfera em 
                         latitudes m{\'e}dias no HS e o comportamento m{\'e}dio dos 
                         v{\'o}rtices cicl{\^o}nicos da Am{\'e}rica do Sul (AS) e 
                         oceanos adjacentes. As an{\'a}lises foram realizadas 
                         utilizando-se dados em pontos de grade de campos 
                         meteorol{\'o}gicos, oriundos das rean{\'a}lises II do National 
                         Centers for Environmental Prediction Departament of Energy 
                         (NCEP-DOE), para o per{\'{\i}}odo de 1991 a 2000. A metodologia 
                         utilizada envolve o uso das t{\'e}cnicas estat{\'{\i}}sticas de 
                         Transformada de Ondaleta, Fun{\c{c}}{\~o}es Ortogonais 
                         Emp{\'{\i}}ricas, Padr{\~a}o de Oscila{\c{c}}{\~a}o Principal 
                         (POP) e TRACK. Avaliou-se tamb{\'e}m o comportamento m{\'e}dio 
                         das trajet{\'o}rias de tempestades (ST) e sua 
                         intera{\c{c}}{\~a}o com os fen{\^o}menos de baixa 
                         frequ{\^e}ncia, El Nino Oscila{\c{c}}{\~a}o Sul (ENOS) e 
                         Oscila{\c{c}}{\~a}o Ant{\'a}rtica (OA). Os resultados mostram 
                         que o primeiro modo dominante para o ver{\~a}o e inverno do 
                         POP/geopotencial apresenta n{\'u}mero de onda zonal 7 e 
                         est{\~a}o associados principalmente {\`a}s regi{\~o}es de maior 
                         baroclinia do HS. O segundo modo do POP/geopotencial 
                         ver{\~a}o/inverno apresenta n{\'u}mero de onda 6 e atividade de 
                         transientes associada a efeitos barotr{\'o}picos e principalmente 
                         ao desenvolvimento corrente abaixo, al{\'e}m da instabilidade 
                         barocl{\'{\i}}nica. As ST de inverno abrangem uma faixa 
                         latitudinalmente mais extensa que a de ver{\~a}o, no entanto a 
                         atividade de v{\'o}rtices {\'e} maior durante a 
                         esta{\c{c}}{\~a}o quente. Os fen{\^o}menos ENOS e OA 
                         influenciam a atividade cicl{\^o}nica em ambas as 
                         esta{\c{c}}{\~o}es, por{\'e}m mais eminentemente durante o 
                         inverno, sendo o ENOS o principal fen{\^o}meno atuante na 
                         regi{\~a}o sul do continente sul-americano e oceanos vizinhos. 
                         ABSTRACT: The analysis of transient disturbances of the middle 
                         troposphere at midlatitudes in Southern Hemisphere and some 
                         characteristics of the extratropical cyclones in the South America 
                         are shown in this study. Analyses were conducted using data grid 
                         points of meteorological fields derived from reanalysis II by the 
                         National Centers for Environmental Prediction - Department of 
                         Energy (NCEP-DOE) for the period 1991-2000. The methodology 
                         involves the use of statistical techniques of Wavelet Transform, 
                         Empirical Orthogonal Function, Principal Oscillation Patterns and 
                         TRACK to diagnose the mean characteristics of ST and their 
                         interactions with low-frequency phenomena, El Nino-Southern 
                         Oscillation (ENSO) and Antarctic Oscillation (AAO). The results 
                         show that the first dominant mode of the POP/geopotencial for 
                         summer and winter display a zonal wavenumber 7 and are mostly 
                         associated with the regions of greatest baroclinicity in SH. On 
                         the other hand, the second mode for summer/winter shows a 
                         wavenumber 6 and transient activity associated especially with 
                         downstream development and baroclinic instability. The winter ST 
                         cover a more extensive range of latitudes than the summer ST. 
                         However the activity of cyclones is higher during the hot season. 
                         The low-frequency phenomenas influence the cyclonic activity in 
                         both seasons, but more eminently during winter time, with the ENSO 
                         being the predominant phenomena in the southern region of the 
                         South American continent and adjacent oceans.",
